‘Sound of Music’ onstage at Oaks

The Oaks Classical Christian Academy’s production of “The Sound of Music,” which follows the story of Maria and the von Trapp Family, premieres tonight. The musical stars Natalya Ferch as Maria, Timothy Fisher as Captain von Trapp, Rachel Yates as Mother Abbess, Hannah Siglin as Elsa Schraeder, Haeden Coffey as Max, Christa LaVoie as Liesl and Jordan Strandness as Rolf Gruber.

Education notebook: Area schools win state achievement awards

Several area schools recently earned Washington Achievement Awards for being among the highest performing schools in the state based on three years of academic information. The award-winning schools are: Central Valley High School, Opportunity Elementary, Summit School, Freeman High School, Liberty High School, Shiloh Hills Elementary, Hallett Elementary, Medical Lake High School, Reardan Elementary, Adams Elementary, Cooper Elementary, Libby Center, Sacajawea Middle School, Wilson Elementary and West Valley High School.

Education Notebook: Free vaccines at high schools

In partnership with the Spokane Regional Health District and the Group Health Foundation, Spokane Public Schools is offering free special immunization clinics at five high schools. The clinics are designed to help get children up to date on their school-required vaccines.

Criminal justice careers on display

High school students interested in the criminal justice system and career opportunities in the legal profession are invited to attend the Youth and Justice Forum on Friday at Spokane Falls Community College. There will be a demonstration with police dogs, a panel with local professionals, a conversation with a court reporter and a court interpreter, career booths and more.

EYE 4 ART show set for Saturday at Mead High

On Saturday, Mead High School will host the ninth annual EYE 4 ART, which promotes art education in the Mead School District. The show will feature 25 professional artists, including Gina Freuen, Gordon Wilson, Karen Mobley, Jill Smith, John Blessent and Dian Zahner. A quarter of the artist’s sales will be donated to EYE 4 ART. The event will also feature technique demonstrations from the artists, a workshop on marketing art, a silent auction and a make-and-take booth for all ages to try their hand at creating wire rings, ceramic art and acrylic painting.

Education Notebook: Student headed to state geography bee

Marshall Roll, a seventh-grader at St. George’s School, is a semifinalist for the 2015 Washington National Geographic State Bee. Roll won the St. George’s geography bee and then submitted a qualifying test to the National Geographic Society. His test scores, plus his status as school champion, qualified him to be one of 100 students to compete at the state geography bee.

NW Christian sets parent preview night

Parents and students interested in learning more about Northwest Christian Schools are invited to attend Parent Preview Night tonight at 6:30 at the school, located at 5104 E. Bernhill Road, Colbert. Parents with students in preschool through 5th grade should gather in the lower campus gym where they will have the opportunity to meet with teachers and staff and view classroom displays. Mt. Spokane to host Hoops for Hope

On Wednesday, the Mead School District will host Hoops for Hope to raise money for the Community Cancer Fund. Faculty members from Mountainside and Northwood middle schools will play during the first and third quarters of the annual benefit game, and staff from Mt. Spokane and Mead high schools will play during the second and fourth quarters of the game. Over the past decade, staff and students have raised more than $45,080 for Coaches for Cancer through Hoops for Hope events. Admission is $5, and raffle tickets, also $5, will be available for purchase the week of the game. Prizes will be raffled during halftime.

Fab 14 vie for royal court

With a new year comes a new group of high school students vying for one of seven spots on the Lilac Festival Royal Court. On Sunday, six will become princesses, and one will become queen. “Each year, they are, as a group, high achieving girls,” said Cecelia Stephens, one of the volunteers with the Lilac Festival and a past president. “They care about the community, they are very giving, and when it’s done, they’re proud to be from this community.”

Ferris seniors directing one-act plays

Ferris Theatre Arts presents Student Directed One Acts tonight and Friday. Each night will feature three pieces directed by Ferris seniors, who are all making their directorial debut. Tonight, Bri Collins will direct “Oedipus Rex,” Zachary Lemsden will direct “The Audition” and Hanna Saunders will direct “Bang Bang You’re Dead.”

ParaSport basketball players team up with Northwest Christian, St. George’s

Northwest Christian and St. George’s will hold their annual Holy Grail basketball competition on Friday. At the event, attendees will have the opportunity to donate to ParaSport Spokane, an organization that provides training and athletic opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities. Eight ParaSport athletes will team up with students from both schools during halftime of the varsity girls game for a game of their own.

Cheney High cyber squads advance

The Cheney High School Cyber Patriots teams competed in the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition on Dec. 6. Team Bravo placed first of 15 teams in the Washington Gold division and fifth in the nation. The team will compete for the Western Regional championship on Jan. 18. Team Bravo is Joe Riddle, Kendra Kendall, Matt Dupler, Bradley Travis, Marianne Pollard and Kyle Sewright. Team Alpha placed second in the state and will also be competing in the regional championship. Team Alpha is Noah Brown, Colton Dotson, Jake McGillicuddy, Andrew Jenkins, Blake Meldrum and Ian Case.

Education Notebook: STCU Hundred Dollar Project winners include Mead students

St. George’s School’s 11th- and 12th-grade Math is Cool team of Jerry Chu, Kenneth Day, Michael Thew and Jennifer Wang won the Masters Elite Division Championship in Moses Lake on Dec. 6. Math teacher Judson Ford said this is the first statewide elite-level title for a St. George’s Math is Cool team. Chu also earned first place in the individual calculus competition.

Portland indie-pop duo stops in at the Bartlett

It’s been two months since singer Timothy Heller got home from a tour, and she’s itching to get back on the road. Heller will soon get her wish as Dresses, the Portland-based indie-pop band she fronts with singer/guitarist Jared Ryan Maldonado, kicks off a short run of dates at the Bartlett on Thursday.
