Despite stepping down from job ‘Mr. Dishman Hills’ continues to advocate for conservation in Spokane region

One hot evening last week, Jeff Lambert laced up his hiking boots and tromped around 102 acres of private property near the Spokane Valley with the landowner, Glen MacPhee. MacPhee, a former biology teacher at University Highschool, has owned that particular slice of the Dishman Hills since 2003, and over the year's he's worked every inch of it, clearing trash and improving the forest's health. As a biology teacher, he'd bring his classes up to the land, which abuts the the Phillips Creek Trailhead, to illustrate the classroom lectures. And in the way of that kind of work, MacPhee fell in love with his land. Still, as he said in an interview Friday, he's human and he has a "family he has to look out for."

But that day was a scorcher and he decided to try to find some air conditioning, so he’d walked up and out of the river valley and to the bus plaza, which is where he heard the news from Jamie.

Preliminary findings from Washington Predator-Prey Project indicate whitetail population is ‘neither increasing nor decreasing’

It was a hot and cloudless day when Taylor Ganz found the dead deer, its fly-ridden corpse already pungent in the August heat. Neither fact discouraged Ganz, a PhD student at the University of Washington who was there, much like a detective in a homicide case, to figure out the how, the when, the why, and most importantly, the who of this death.
