Your weekly roundup
UPDATE SUNDAY 2/28
– In what’s being billed as an upset , Trickster’s JuiceBox has advanced to the Sweet 16 in the Brewing News’ National IPA Championships (see third item below) by besting Fat Head’s Mr. Mean Green – but faces a formidable challenge next weekend against Barley Brown’s Pallet Jack, the 2013 champion. Meanwhile, Hops on Parade fell to its third-round competition, Second Street’s Trebuchet.
Catching up with more of the past week’s craft beer news around the region:
– Tickets now are on sale online for No-Li’s next small-batch festival on May 21 (which is the Saturday of Craft Beer Week ). The brewery’s March 5 festival sold out in advance last Tuesday, so don’t wait too long if you want to get in on this one.
– Tickets also went on sale this week for Sierra Nevada’s six Beer Camp Across America events, including a June 11 date at Seattle’s Lake Union Park. The lineup will include six collaboration beers from brewers around the country – including a cheekily named Moxee-Moron Imperial Session IPA spearheaded by Yakima’s Bale Breaker – along with other offerings from regional breweries; tickets are $50 ($70 for early access, $35 for designated drivers).
– Trickster’s JuiceBox IPA and Hops on Parade imperial IPA have both made it to the third round of the Brewing News’ National IPA Championships , modeled after the NCAA basketball tournament bracket. That means each is among 32 beers remaining in its category; JuiceBox next faces off against Fat Head’s Mr. Mean Green, while Hops on Parade takes on Second Street ‘s Trebuchet.
– Breakside was the big winner at Tuesday’s inaugural Oregon Beer Awards , with six medals: gold for Wanderlust IPA, Hop Delivery Mechanism double IPA and Vienna Coffee Beer, silvers for Safe Word triple IPA and Bon Vivant Belgian-style pale, and a bronze for The Pathfinder gin barrel-aged double IPA.
Taking home three medals each were Widmer (gold for Hefeweizen and PDX Pils, silver for Green and Gold kolsch); pFriem , which was named brewery of the year (silvers for Mosaic Pale and Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout, bronze for Double IPA); and Golden Valley (silver for Atlas Elevator Doppelbock, bronze for Red Thistle Ale and Bald Peak IPA). The Commons earned two golds, for Urban Farmhouse Ale and Clarabelle gin barrel-aged saison with peaches.
– And in Ellensburg, Central Washington University’s Craft Brewing Program and Yakima Valley Hops are finishing up an experiment to brew 30 different single-hop beers in 30 days to analyze each hop’s characteristics, with the final session scheduled next Tuesday. The results will be evaluated by trained tasting panels, followed by a final public report.
