Wild Card/Tuesday -- 5.3.16 26

I'm still recovering from prolonged exposure to two grand-cats in Portland. But I'm back at my post at Huckleberries Central. I'm surviving on a mixture of cough medicine, Dayquil & coffee. The prognosis looks good. OTOH, you were in the capable hands of super-subs Taryn & Cindy last week.

Here's the flier that was dropped in the mail today in support of Paul Amador's GOP primary challenge to state Rep. Kathy Sims, R-Coeur d'Alene. Coeur d'Alene has the opportunity to replace a legislator (Sims), who regularly votes against education, with a candidate who will support education.

State Rep. Shannon McMillan, R-Silverton, says it’s President Obama’s fault that she hasn’t been able to pass legislation in Idaho overturning EPA regulations. She told the Lewiston Tribune: “My people in Shoshone County want me to deal with the EPA. But as long as we have this president, I'm not going to get anywhere with my bills.”

A positive flier

After all the political garbage that has filled my mailbox in recent weeks, it was nice to receive a mailer from a local politician who talked about children, education, families and the future of this great state. In fact, it was swell to hear a Republican legislator from North Idaho speak well of public education.

The Bard: Spokane Airport Security

The Bard of Sherman Avenue has shuffled off this mortal coil. But his poetry will linger on here at Huckleberries Online. Here's one of his earliest -- from July 11, 2002. In it, he takes a gentle swipe at "Spokane Airport Security," in wake, I suppose, of a crackdown prompted by the ongoing terrorism scare unleashed by 9/11.

Littlejohn gets by on $68K/year pension 34

Alan Littlejohn, 53, a former California fireman, wants to significantly restrict the funding of Idaho state colleges. Also, he wants to require a two-thirds vote to pass school levies. Cut, cut, cut government appears to be his motto. Meanwhile, he gets by on a $68,000-per-year pension from the state of California. Amazing but true.

This 2003 SR file photo by Jesse Tinsley shows Tom Wobker, right, about a year after I began posting his poems in Huckleberries and my old Hot Potatoes column. At the time, Tom and Ron Nicklas, left, were running Pennaluna and Co, a small independent stock brokerage firm in Coeur d'Alene (near the corner of Sherman Avenue and 5th Street.

The Bard won't be forgotten

I learned of the passing of my friend Tom Wobker, the Bard of Sherman Avenue, on the first day of my recent vacation, Saturday, April 23. Fittingly, he died on the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. He didn't want a service, according to his wife. He felt the "Bard Reveal" at Blogfest 2016 was tribute enough for his fine work.
