Current Position: Reporter Intern

Mathew Callaghan is a reporter intern and general assignment reporter for The Spokesman-Review. He is a recent graduate of Western Washington University and was an Alum Assistant with the newspaper's Teen Journalism Institute in 2024. A graduate of Deer Park High School, Mathew joined The Spokesman-Review in 2022 as an intern reporter with the Teen Journalism Institute where students apply and are selected to an 8-week summer program open to high school students or recent graduates and made possible by a grant from Bank of America.

In 1957, a 23-year-old Jane Goodall saved up enough money out of secretarial school and traveled from England to a friend’s farm in Kenya. While there, she met paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey, who offered her a job at a nearby natural history museum. It did not take long for Leakey to realize that Goodall’s passion for animals, her elevated patience, high energy and bravery would make her a great fit for studying wild chimpanzees.
