Violin string broke, but symphony played on

On today's Wild Card, FlorineD comments re: an extraordinary display of cool at the Spokane Symphony Sunday. Seems the guest violinist was in the middle of Tchaikovsky's violin concerto when a string on his Strad broke. The guest violinist traded violins with the concert master, beginning a series of flawless handoffs.

Reflections on Lake Coeur d'Alene

Photographer Don Sausser caught this shot of reflections at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Boardwalk Sunday. The boardwalk was hard hit by the recent flooding. But I suspect that it won't be long before the preparation for the tourism season begins in earnest again.

Keep Fearless Girl on Wall Street? 11

Seems pressure is mounting to keep the Fearless Girl statue in New York City's financial district, challenging the iconic Charging Bull of Wall Street. What say you? Q: Why should/shouldn't Fearless Girl be allowed to stay in its current location, in front of Charging Bull?

Amendment for bill reading? Really?

So Rep. John McCrostie, D-Boise, has proposed a constitutional amendment to ensure that the stalling tactics of state Reps. Heather Scott and Priscilla Giddings won't get in the way next session. Really? A constitutional amendment to deal with a couple of protesting Hard Right legislators? Talk about overkill.

Trib: Do grandstanders have a point?

Marty Trillhaase/Lewiston Tribune and other political observers didn't expect much from the 2017 Idaho Legislature. But he did expect the lackluster session to end on time. The Legislature wasn't able to meet that modest goal due to the grandstanding of two Panhandle representations: Heather Scott & Priscilla Giddings.

Down side of senior discounts 13

In a Lewiston Tribune column, Kathy Hedberg comments: "I know I should not look a gift horse in the mouth but when the 20-something store clerk gave me the senior citizens discount recently without even asking for my ID, I was miffed." Question (for Seasoned Citizens): Do you get miffed when a clerk arbitrarily gives you a senior discount?

When did you become a Zags' fan? 12

I became a Gonzaga Bulldogs fan during their golden run in 1999, when they advanced to the Elite Eight as a No. 10 seed, before being beaten by UConn, the eventual NCAA Tournament champion. Question: When did you become a Gonzaga Bulldogs men's basketball fan?

2017 Legislature drags on

In her Sunday column, Betsy Russell/Eye on Boise reports that the 2017 Idaho Legislature is growing restive as the session drags on. A large part of the problem is the antics by state Rep. Heather Scott & allies to delay votes by demanding a full reading of House bills. Another part is lawmakers who want something done about roads.

36 reasons Gonzaga can win it all

In his column today, John Blanchette/SR provides 36 reasons -- one for each victory this season -- that Gonzaga can win it all, beginning with: " "Because after Mark Few cut down the last of the net in San Jose, he hollered to his players 'Might as well win it!'"

Final 4: Gonzaga 83, Xavier 59

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs left no doubt, beating Xavier 83-59 on Saturday to punch the program’s first-ever ticket to the Final Four. Whatever shooting struggles plagued the Zags early in their tournament run were nowhere to be seen as the team shot 47.5-percent from the field and made 12 3-pointers in 24 attempts.

Weekend Wild Card -- 3.25-26.17 12

I only have two things on the agenda this weekend: Zags and taxes. One more win and Zag Nation reaches the finals. As far as the taxes go, I'm earlier than usual. I'm usually a procrastinator who waits until the next to last weekend. So…

Zags' Wild Card -- 3.24.17

In the 60 years that I've been a sports fan, I've had four moments of pure joy. And the new top moment occurred last night in the final minute of the Sweet 16 game between Gonzaga and West Virginia when Jordan Mathews hit the critical three and then the Zags' shut-down defense stopped West Virginia.
