Teaching self-hatred

The article about 600 more unmarked graves at the Marieval Indian Residential School ("600 more bodies found at former site of indigenous school for children in Canada," June 25), which the Cowessess First Nation found south of Regina, Saskatchewan, was heart-wrenching.

This is an emergency

Apparently the saying “Nero fiddled while Rome burned” is not true. Even so, we use it to discuss a person who is an irresponsible leader that is so out of touch with a major emergency that they instead have fun while others suffer. Is that not what our leaders are doing and have been doing for decades? Is that not what we individuals have been doing? Let's not continue to fiddle while America and the world burns, floods, and fries anymore!

Rep. Scott Bedke: Happy Birthday, Idaho - Let’s celebrate and maintain the Idaho way

There is no better place to live, work and raise a family than Idaho. As a proud Idaho native who believes, promotes and lives our conservative ideals, I have known this my whole life. Now others from all over the country are discovering what we’ve always known. We are seeing unprecedented population growth as individuals and families move to all corners of our state. While we grow, we need to make sure we don’t lose what has made us the great state we are.

Getting There: With climate getting hotter, gas power can’t cool us down

There's no single source of the greenhouse gases that are warming our planet, and there's no definitive way to tie the Pacific Northwest's recent heat wave to those gases. But ample evidence indicates Spokane is getting hotter and drier, and that gas-guzzling vehicles are a major source of carbon emissions in our area.

A tough choice

I can't decide who is worse: Avista for not being sufficiently prepared for this heat wave to at least warn us about the nasty thing they were about to pull or Mayor Woodward's administration for not finding a path to opening the pools this week.

Not perfect, but better

While I voted for Joe Biden, I am not in complete agreement with his entire agenda nor some of the impacts they might have on the economy.

Pressing their luck

On June 28, eight thousand people in Spokane lost power. Avista, without warning had turned off their power. Yes, extreme heat was a factor, yet not giving those people advance notice was wrong.

CRT is about the truth

Can someone explain why patriotic Americans want to trash the First Amendment by opposing the age-appropriate teaching of Critical Race Theory (i.e., systemic racism), and lying to our youth? Learning what has been omitted from many classrooms promotes honoring our American ideals.

Elizabeth Shackelford: The U.S. in Afghanistan: It was always going to end this way

The security situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating, prompting many to second-guess President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops by Sept. 11. This is an understandable emotional reaction, but it isn’t supported by facts. More time won’t change the outcome. If U.S. troops left Afghanistan five years ago or five years from now, it was always going to end this way.

Enforcement saves lives

The incident in which Benjamin Gedeon was struck by a car ("Lawsuit alleges city negligence after pedestrian hit at crossing," June 28) raises issues of driving habits.
