State basketball tournament seeds, brackets released; seven GSL teams receive ‘protected’ bids

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, in conjunction with its seeding committees, released the seeds and brackets for the 2026 state basketball tournaments on Sunday, and seven Greater Spokane League teams were awarded top -eight seeds, meaning that they will move on to the state venue regardless of outcome in the regional round of play this week.

The Northwest Christian girls team went on a Cinderella run last year at state, entering seeded eighth, upsetting No. 1 Rainier in a regional-round game and eventually claiming the State 2B championship with a 73-66 win over Adna in the title game.

The Ridgeline girls team entered the District 6 3A tournament as the No. 1 seed and breezed past Mt. Spokane in the first round, so a win Tuesday in a semifinal against Southridge – which tied for the Mid-Columbia Conference title – would mean clinching a third-consecutive trip to state for the Falcons.

Senior Quinn Lipke goes for career-high, University boys top Central Valley in semifinal; Gonzaga Prep girls roll | District 6 basketball

University senior Quinn Lipke picked a good night to put up his career-best night. Lipke had five 3-pointers, finishing with 21 points, and the visiting seventh-seeded Titans (14-8) beat third-seeded Central Valley (15-7) 72-65 in a District 6 3A semifinal on Tuesday.

The Spokane Indians, in conjunction with their parent club the Colorado Rockies, announced that Tom Sutaris will take over as manager for the 2026 season after serving as bench coach the past two seasons under previous manager Robinson Cancel, who was named manager at Double-A Hartford.

The Spokane Chiefs are clinging to the last playoff spot in the Western Conference, with a one-point advantage over the Victoria Royals. At the start of an 11-game stretch against teams either below them in the standings or immediately above, there's no time like the present for the Chiefs to solidify that playoff spot and maybe creep up on Portland and Tri-City, tied for sixth and seventh places three points better than Spokane.
