Disco’s macho men put on the glitz before Cher

Born as a corporate attempt to capitalize on the "everything disco" movement of the late '70s, the Village People became one of the most identifiable bands of the 20th century. Aside from moving millions of albums and singles, perhaps the Village People's greatest accomplishment is that the band still is working. In addition to a string of dates on Cher's "Farewell Never Can Say Goodbye" tour, which includes a 7 p.m. show on Sunday at the Spokane Arena, the Village People have been on the road constantly for the past two years – far more than can be said for most disco-era hit-makers.

Don’t force a friend to choose between love and you, unless you’re ready to lose

Q: My lifelong buddy recently fell in love with a woman, and it has put a serious crimp in our friendship. He skips our weekly poker game, has to check with her before he can hang out and generally seems a lot cooler toward us guys. Should I say something or wait this out? Steve: As Ambrose Bierce has observed, love is a temporary insanity curable only by marriage or by removal of the influences that caused the disorder. Be tolerant of the fellow and bide your time.

Filmmaker returns to Idaho roots, will hold open casting call Sunday

Bill Canepa is hoping for good weather in February. On Feb. 10, Canepa will begin shooting his first feature film – tentatively titled "Home and How to Break It" – in Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Spokane, and he's already facing enough problems. Not only will he be working with an equally inexperienced crew and cast, but he'll also be trying to double as producer and director, and he'll be overseeing a budget that, essentially, is the financial-aid money he was given for his last semester as a film student at San Francisco State University.

Meeting the parents? Plan ahead — and don’t belch

When meeting someone who could become family, you don't want to be a Focker. When it comes to Greg Focker, a main character portrayed by Ben Stiller in the movie "Meet the Parents" and the new "Meet the Fockers," disaster is the poor love-struck dude's middle name. (Actually, it's M., as in M. Focker, but that's another story.) In the spirit of the two movies/ horror shows, we asked two dating experts what not to do when meeting your loved one's parents.

'The Work and the Glory' Based on the first volume of Gerald N. Lund's best-selling novel, "The Work and the Glory" tells the story of the beginnings of the Mormon Church. It revolves around a family of farmers that comes apart when one of its hired workers, a guy named Joseph Smith, begins making grand claims about angelic visitations. The movie opens today for an exclusive run at the Spokane Valley Cinemas.

Small spill could spell big problems for real estate values and area residents

Our aquifer may have dodged a bullet when Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Co. shut down a leaky wastewater pipe at its North Idaho diesel refueling station before it could leach more dangerous chemicals into the water. But allowing the depot to keep operating without an adequate system for handling spills is like playing Russian roulette with a fully loaded gun. Wonder which end of the barrel we're on? Consider what happened to homeowners in North Havre, Mont., when soil and wells in the unincorporated community were contaminated by 1.2 million gallons of diesel spilled over the years at a nearby rail yard now owned by BNSF. After residents sued over related health problems and plummeting property values, the railroad started buying some of the most contaminated land. After initially purchasing 15 lots last year, the company entered into right-of- first-refusal buying agreements with 60 other homeowners. But local Realtors say the railroad is snapping up any contaminated properties owners will sell.

(SPIN) ready … set …

EVERY AIR-GUITAR head in the '80s wanted to be Steve Vai. Skip the basics, bring on the flashy solos and speed riffs. Spokane DJ Cheddar Chad sees the same attitude when he is approached by beginners who want to learn the tricks of the turntable trade. It reminds him of a lesson he learned while attending a workshop with upright bass master and jazz legend Ron Carter a couple of years ago when he came to Sandpoint.

Verdict pays big money for patent infringement

Every time your game makes your PlayStation 2 controller buzz, you're now supporting Microsoft. It sounds funny, but a lawsuit verdict upheld by a California judge last week makes Sony responsible for about $27 million a year in payments to Immersion Corp., which sued the gaming giant in 2002 claiming that the Dual Shock controllers' vibration feedback and the games that used it violated its patents.

Very own apartment comes later in game

Moving day has arrived at my revolving door, but this time there's no second thoughts or gut-wrenching goodbyes – just a big ol' "I'm outta here!" Since I last left things, I was living with one guy roommate – the one who wasn't working and was on the computer day and night with all his buddies over. Need more reminding? He's become known to my friends simply as "buttcrack man."

‘Coach Carter’ plays sappy but sincere

Based on a true story, "Coach Carter" follows a hoops guru who leads his inner-city high school to an undefeated season but then halts the program when the kids fail to deliver on their promise to maintain a 2.3 grade point average. The movie may consist of formulaic elements, but it excels on the strength of its cast and the sincerity of its message.

‘Elektra’s‘ plot, romance are less than shocking

Some people might feel that the debut of "Elektra," a Jennifer Garner movie in which she plays a dashing assassin, coming in the same month as the return of "Alias," a Jennifer Garner TV show in which she plays a dashing double agent, is overkill. But overkill is what Elektra – and "Elektra" – are all about.

Fishbone pays a call while new joints get jumping

The members of frantic funk-rock-ska outfit Fishbone haven't been playing music over the past few weeks, but they've been surfing a little and partying – a lot. "We don't practice that much. We just try to have fun. Our guys play well enough that we don't need to practice. We'll practice a little to get warmed up, but we'll party hard first," said Fishbone's founding bassist Norwood Fisher who, along with drummer John Stewart, recently has become a hardcore surf aficionado.

Hold us closer, Tiny Mix Tapes

What it is: Music fans – particularly those cutting-edge enough to know the difference between lo-fi and emo (or even house and techno) – will groove to the far-ranging coverage of CD and concert reviews, news, interviews and articles on the volunteer-staffed Web site Tiny Mix Tapes ( www.tinymixtapes.com). But even those of us too unhip to tell Franz Ferdinand from Modest Mouse can appreciate the site's automatic mix-tape generator ( www.tinymixtapes.com/amg/), which provides a list of songs perfect for any proffered situation, ranging from the universal ("songs to get me walking just a little faster than the 100-pound anorexic cheerleader on the treadmill next to me") to the weirdly specific ("songs I can listen to while licking the inside of my yogurt cup"). What it's all about: Back in the day, mix tapes – individual cassette-tape compilations of your favorite songs – were as prevalent as melisma on a Mariah Carey record. Today, cassettes are nearly as outdated as eight-track tapes (or, for that matter, Mariah Carey), but – thanks to the popularity of downloadable music tracks and CD burners – personalized musical medleys are as easy to create as bland, cheesy pop stars . The hardest part is deciding which songs to include, and the music mavens who compile the quirky set lists for Tiny Mix Tapes do a fine job in determining exactly which tunes would best make up a soundtrack for when "it's 3 a.m., the house is deathly quiet and you think you can hear someone just outside your open window" or for the gentleman who requested "songs to help me keep thinking it was a good idea to forgive my wife for having an affair, which most of the time I do, but occasionally I want to smash her car windshield with a hammer."

Life’s too short for grudge against boyfriend’s contact with ex-wife

Q: I'm in a relationship with a very nice man. We're both in our early 80s and go out dancing three times a week. The problem is he keeps in touch with his first wife. He says they're just good friends, and she's 2,000 miles away. He was back there two years ago and took her out to lunch, even though she has a husband of 30 years. I call that cheating on her husband. They often talk on the phone for more than an hour. She sends him pictures of herself. I feel this is wrong. It upsets me. He says I'm making a big issue over nothing. What do you say? Mia: Is she sending him naked pictures of herself? (OK, I guess at 80 that would be a little weird, but you never know.) You can't really stop him from being friends with her, I'm afraid. And if you bug him about it too much, it may make him mad. She's 2,000 miles away. Give it a rest.

‘Lightning’ brings blues center stage with bold images, big musicians

"Lightning in a Bottle" is a tribute to the blues that's structured around a show held last year at New York's Radio City Music Hall. And if you ever loved this kind of music, "Lightning" will bring the reasons back. If you haven't, you'll likely wonder where this has been all your life. Brought together were more than 50 musicians representing decades of performing experience. There were originating artists, such as B.B. King ("Sweet Sixteen") and Ruth Brown ("Mama He Treat Your Daughter Mean"), performing songs they made famous as well as newcomers doing dazzling cover versions of classic tunes.

Oracle Shack jams more music into shorter tunes on new CD

Four years, three bass players and one appendix after Oracle Shack began its quest toward musical innovation, the progressive jam band is finally on the verge of releasing a studio album. Sure, the artwork isn't finished and the record still needs to be mastered, but by early February the yet untitled album will be available for purchase. That is, barring any mishaps, which is more than can be said for the Moscow, Idaho-based band's previous record – lost after an incident involving the computer housing the recordings.
