What if we looked for opportunities to bring communities together? What if we worked to build strength in our diversity and in our belief that we are better together? The Inland Northwest can be better together.

The city of Spokane is looking for input on a new city flag and there are several good flag designs to ponder.

I have always been proud of the East Valley High School community, but never more so than how we all came together on behalf of our students during the incredibly challenging impacts of the pandemic. These challenges, of course, continue.

Somewhere amid the rhetoric over a proposed downtown athletic stadium is the bald fact of who benefits. Go ahead and build it, a not-unworthy venture, and send them the bill. The good side is they get the profits, if any.

Bare shelves, food limits in grocery stores and food chain supply lines backed up across the country.

With the COVID-19 vaccine now being administered to U.S. citizens, we are now beckoned with the question of what to do next to stop COVID-19. A crucial step in stopping COVID-19 is giving aid to underdeveloped countries. Diseases do not respect borders, and COVID-19 is no exception. If we do not stop COVID-19 in its entirety, it will always be an issue.

Despite reporting by The Spokesman Review on Dec. 21 that the Vatican declared it “morally acceptable” for parishioners to receive COVID-19 vaccines using aborted fetus cell lines, local Catholic leaders still encourage Catholics to avoid these vaccines, showing disregard for community members’ health (“Local Catholic leaders say to avoid Johnson & Johnson vaccine made with fetal cell lines if possible, but health experts disagree,” March 4).

One of the talking points of former president Donald Trump's "Stop the steal" is that some Democratic governors appointed the electors, while the U.S. Constitution requires the legislatures to do the appointing. It looks to me like that's not true.

In the next couple of weeks, many in Washington state and Idaho will start receiving checks in the amount of $1,400 for individuals and twice that amount for married couples. Families will also receive $1,400 per child. State and local governments will get aid for opening schools, preventing layoffs of public employees, extended unemployment benefits until September, child tax credits, and money to help small businesses. The top one percent get nothing, zip, zero. As it should be.

I gained great respect for Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich during the many years we worked together to improve our community's treatment and pursuit of justice for child victims of crime.

Per President Biden’s request that he resign, William Hyslop is leaving DC and returning to Spokane. Now Hyslop pledges to serve our community by working at combatting illegal drugs in Eastern Washington, specifically fentanyl.
