Mackinac Island, Michigan, is a 19th-century escape from the contemporary world

Crashing waves struck the prow, the cold water of Lake Huron splashing those of us braving the top deck of the small ferry. My lifelong friend, Arielle, shielded her face with her hat until the vessel eased into calmer waters on its approximately 20-minute voyage to Mackinac Island. Miles of blue stretched toward the late-morning horizon, the green Mackinac Bridge prominently featured as its 5-mile span connected Michigan’s peninsulas.

Update: Man charged with felony hit-and-run in I-90 collision near Argonne Road that injured 2

Update: The alleged driver of a hit-and-run on Interstate 90 that Washington State Patrol described as a "road-rage" incident in Spokane Valley has been  identified as 64-year-old Scott H. Beeching, according to a memo released by WSP, and is facing a felony charge for the hit-and-run. The details of the charge are unknown as of Wednesday night.

‘White Chicks,’ ‘Scary Movie’ star Shawn Wayans returns to the Spokane Comedy Club this weekend

For Shawn Wayans, show business is a family affair as one of five brothers who found successful careers in the entertainment industry. Known for his comedic roles in films, such as early 2000s horror parodies “Scary Movie” and “Scary Movie 2,” as well as “White Chicks,” in which he starred alongside his younger brother Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans will take the Spokane Comedy Club stage this weekend for another round of laughs.

Valentine’s Day coloring contest winners announced

This year’s Valentine’s Day coloring contest conveyed much tender love and care from area youth, with The Spokesman-Review receiving 78 entries. Three winners were chosen in each age group. And, as can be expected, the judges had their hearts stolen; it wasn’t easy picking.
