In their first season last year, the Spokane Velocity made it to the USL League One title match but lost to Union Omaha. They went into this season with unfinished business and are now one step from winning it all.

PORTLAND – Owen Martin scored an insurance goal in the middle of the second period, and the Spokane Chiefs withstood a furious comeback to edge the Portland Winterhawks 4-3 in a Western Hockey League game at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday.

SEATTLE – A couple of weeks ago, Kraken rookie Berkly Catton found himself jostling for position on the ice with an opponent, unsure of who it was in the moment.

Since the start of the team's second season, it's been clear that the Spokane Velocity were poised for a consecutive playoff bid– after finishing as runner-ups in its first year– as they won 14 games, and allowed a league-best 1.16 goals per match during the regular season, earning home-field advantage for the quarterfinal round of the 2025-26 League One postseason. 

The victory is Scaroni's third in four years in the Big Apple, including wins in 2022 and last year. 

The Spokane Chiefs couldn’t stay out of the penalty box and the U.S. Division-leading Everett Silvertips were more than happy to take advantage of the situation.

The Spokane Zephyr could only hold on for so long.

The schedule makers didn't do the Spokane Chiefs any favors in the early going of the 2025-26 season. It's not quite Halloween yet and the Chiefs have already competed a 10-day, six-game road trip and faced the points leaders of two of the four divisions. 

The Spokane Chiefs and the Everett Silvertips came into Sunday’s game as two of the stingier teams in the Western Hockey League, ranked third and second respectively in fewest goals allowed this season.

Jeff Gove, director of instruction at The Idaho Club near Sandpoint, closed with a 4-under 68 Sunday to claim fifth place at the Senior PGA Professional Championship and qualify for the 2026 Senior PGA Championship.

While the Spokane Velocity had already clinched a playoff position, and home-field advantage in the first round of the 2025 postseason, their seeding still needed sorting, with the USL League One regular season drawing to a close on Saturday.
