The latest installment in the "Fantastic Beasts" series of movie prequels based on characters from the Harry Potter universe – the third of five planned films – involves a bit of a feint in more ways than one. Although subtitled "The Secrets of Dumbledore," the movie is only nominally about Dumbledore family secrets.

To repeat what is a cold take by now, for a show titled “Funny Girl,” the story is a remarkably sad one. Set in New York City before and following World War I, “Funny Girl” is a semi-biographical musical account of the life of Ziegfeld Follies star Fanny Brice and her loving but ultimately toxic relationship with Nicky Arnstein.

“Father Stu”? He’s not a regular priest, he’s a cool priest. A tough priest. A priest who swears (a lot), a priest with a history of boozing and boxing. That’s the story told, at least by the film’s poster, which features Mark Wahlberg looking rough and rueful in a mug shot and then beatific in Catholic clergy apparel.

Multiple Grammy Award-winning composer and conductor Maria Schneider joins forces with the Whitworth Jazz Band to perform several of Schneider’s original jazz compositions. Rescheduled from late 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, this event marks the university’s 33rd Annual Guest Artist Jazz Concert.

“Tokyo Vice” takes viewers into the Japanese underworld through the experiences of the sole American reporter (Ansel Elgort) on the crime beat of a Tokyo newspaper in 1999. Ken Watanabe co-stars as the police detective who introduces the American to the wary power dynamics between the cops and the yakuza.

Allen Stone stood out at the "American Song Contest" party three weeks ago in Austin, Texas. Each songwriter from all 50 states, five territories and Washington, D.C., was represented and featured courtesy of a photograph at the soiree, which touted NBC's latest music reality-TV series.

We need to talk about "Aline." More specifically, we need to talk about that face. If you watch the "Aline" – described in its trailer as "a fiction freely inspired by the life of singer Celine Dion" – all you'll be able to think about is the face. It's the face of French director, writer, co-producer and star Valérie Lemercier.

In "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," there is no problem that can't be outrun by its titular speed demon. With that in mind, it's especially perplexing that this video game-inspired sequel should be, of all things, a bit sluggish. The follow-up gets bogged down in some muddled franchise bloat.

Based purely on anecdotal evidence, the spy thriller "All the Old Knives" is going to be a talker. More specifically – if the three conversations I overheard on the way back to the subway from a recent screening are any indication – many of those conversations are going to begin with, "What the flip just happened?" 

Based on Mick Herron’s spy novel series, “Slow Horses” follows a downcast team of MI5 operatives assigned to “Slough House,” the organization’s catch all for screwups. Desk-bound and relegated to paper pushing, the agents are bored to the point of quitting until they find themselves at the center of a dangerous case.

Local rapper Pive, born Ryan Mullane, is back and better than ever, following up his 2021 debut “I Will Forever Be” with a series of singles throughout March and April. The first of three tracks to be released was “Unforgiveable,” a collaboration with Kansas City-based artist Rose the Mermaid.

Electronic Entertainment Expo recently sent emails to would-be vendors that E3 2022 was canceled altogether after being relegated to a digital-only event in an earlier statement. It’s a surprise considering the previous year was hosted online. There’s plenty of speculation and very few facts why ESA decided to pull the plug.

It was strange catching Fleetwood Mac without Lindsey Buckingham during the band's 2019 tour. Buckingham, who was fired from the iconic act in 2018, was an integral part of the Fleetwood Mac sound. His clever songwriting, unique guitar style and distinctive vocals transformed the band.

Director Michael Bay isn't satisfied with making a movie that merely raises your pulse. He wants to inject pure cinema into your veins – and drive it all the way to your heart, which he then proceeds to tug at like a Victorian novelist (assuming, say, Charles Dickens reveled in shootouts and explosions).
