Writer Mary Farrell to lead spiritual workshop for families

Mary Cronk Farrell is presenting a workshop that will discuss spiritual fall family activities Tuesday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Auntie's Bookstore, 402 W. Main Ave. Farrell is the author of the book "Celebrating Faith: Year-Round Activities for Catholic Families" and will discuss activities for Halloween, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving.

Crisp fall tradition strong at Green Bluff

I've noticed a bite in the air lately that puts me in mind of crisp apples and pumpkin patches, so I recently organized my mother and my sister for a trip to Green Bluff. We wandered around the craft booths, sampled different varieties of apples, ate hot dogs and picked our own apples, while other visitors went for hay rides and wandered through corn mazes.

Belly dancing workshop, lecture scheduled

Bellydancers Unlimited is presenting master dance instructor Aisha Ali for workshops and a history lecture in Spokane on Oct. 15 and 16. On Oct. 15, Ali will discuss the historical background of belly dancing, manipulating the abdominal muscles and using the movement in Oriental and folkloric dances from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Warehouse Jazz Court, 800 N. Hamilton St. The cost is $65. That night at 7, she will speak about Zar and other trance dances at Gonzaga University's Jundt Art Museum Theater, 202 E. Cataldo Ave. The cost is $15 at the door ($10 for students with ID). An open dance will follow at A Taste of India Restaurant, 3110 N. Division St.

Westminster Congregational event will aid food programs

Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington St., will present "Manna 2005: A Benefit Music Revue for Second Harvest Food Bank and Meals on Wheels of Spokane" Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The master of ceremonies will be Mark Peterson of KXLY, and performers will include the Celtic Nots, Sidhe and the Spokane Area Children's Chorus. The day will also feature gift baskets that will be available for viewing at 4 p.m. through intermission.

I have a sister who plans for months for Halloween. She's an excellent seamstress who sews costumes for her friends, me and best of all, her beagle, Angus. One year he was a cat. Another year he was Kermit the Frog. Last year he was Donkey from Shrek.

Photos of Spokane wanted for Jundt ‘Lens’ exhibit

The Jundt Art Museum, 202 E. Cataldo Ave., on the campus of Gonzaga University is looking for photographs to exhibit during its "Through My Lens: Spokane 1995-2005." Photos can be black and white or color, must be no larger than 8½-by-11 inches including the borders, and must feature Spokane and have been produced in the last 10 years. The museum will accept traditional or digital photos, and they must not be matted or framed.

Gospel quartet to perform at First Church of Nazarene

Spokane First Church of the Nazarene, 9004 N. Country Homes Blvd., is hosting Liberty, a traditional Southern Gospel quartet, Sunday at 6 p.m. The group travels to churches, prisons, conventions and nursing homes, and produces two recordings a year.

MAC signing up travelers for cultural tour of Arizona

The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture is presenting "A Southwest Cultural Quest," a five-day tour of Arizona, Nov. 30 through Dec. 4. The trip will include stops at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Frank Lloyd Wright's Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium at Arizona State University and Taliesin West, and the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village in Sedona. The cost ranges from $1,100 to $1,390, depending on occupancy, which includes airfare, lodging, admission to all the museums and venues and selected meals.

After 125 years of worship, the Moran United Methodist Church, 3601 E. 65th Ave., is celebrating with a weekend full of activities. Pack heaping helping of safety into your lunch

Packing a lunch every day has never been an easy task for me. First, I have to figure out ahead of time what I will want to eat. Then, I have to persuade myself to actually eat that nice, healthy, packed lunch instead of running off to buy a hamburger dripping with cheese and fatty goodness. When I do pack my lunch, I have to admit that food safety has never entered my mind as I'm throwing whatever leftovers from the night before into my bag.

Spokane Arts Awards nominations being accepted

The Spokane Arts Commission is accepting nominations for the 2005 City of Spokane Arts Awards. Candidates can be nominated in the following categories: individual artist, arts organization, arts in education, individual benefactor, business benefactor and arts community leadership. The awards will be presented during a City Council meeting in October. The deadline to submit a nomination is Friday. Nomination forms are available by e-mailing arts@spokanecity.org or at the Chase Gallery in the lower level of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

Lake City Playhouse schedules September auditions

The Lake City Playhouse in Coeur d'Alene is holding auditions in September for three upcoming plays. Auditions for "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," based on the story by Washington Irving, will be Sept. 6 and 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Harding Family Center, 411 N. 15th St., Coeur d'Alene. Needed are nine or more adults and children of all ages. On Sept. 12 and 13, auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Playhouse, 1320 E. Garden Ave., for "It's a Wonderful Life," based on the classic Frank Capra movie. Twelve men, 10 women, two to four boys and two girls are needed.
