The demise of the GOP

I truly hope people are realizing there is a battle going on for the future of the Republican Party and the country.

Time for the 25th!

How much more proof does America need to witness in order to come to the realization that President Trump is mentally unfit to remain in office? What's happening in Washington DC has been instigated by a delusional president. We have witnessed events that happen only in third world countries or dystopian movies. The U.S. Capitol was breached because Donald J. Trump let it happen.

Too little, too late

It was inevitable that some Trump supporters would use violence in an attempted coup d’etat. Throughout his campaigns and one term, Trump has repeatedly suggested using violence and even now still lies about the election being stolen, rigged, & fraudulent.

Where is our democracy?

As I write, the U.S. Capitol Building has been invaded by right-wing protesters and Congress has been forced to suspend its session intended to validate the votes of the Electoral College. This is unprecedented in American democracy. As Shannon Watts commented on Twitter, “The party of law and order is fighting with police in an attempt to break into the Capitol and harm lawmakers.”

It’s not that simple

If she were writing from the usual secular-political standpoint we could simply label Elaine Stanovsky's guest opinion ("Whether to gather? People of faith must do better," Dec. 22) as "more of the same old" which we constantly hear from the media, but she is writing as Bishop J.W. Stanovsky. She writes that she is "speaking as a Christian leader of 65% of Americans who identify as Christians ..." How she comes up with that precise percentage I have no idea. (Scores of Americans falsely assume they are Christians simply by being born in America).

Madsen got it right`

While I often disagree with Spokesman columnist Sue Lani Madsen, I completely agree with her thatt "Columnists have biases; news accounts shouldn't," (Dec. 31st).

They think they’re clever

On Christmas eve early afternoon I went to our neighborhood grocery store to pick up items for the long weekend. During the 45 minutes that I was in the store I counted 5 people that weren't wearing face masks. I was amazed as everyone coming into the store is asked to put on a mask and if you don't have one the store supplies one.

A question for us all

Thanks to William Baxley ("Seven questions," Jan 2) for laying out so completely the rumors and conjectures associated with the lawsuits filed by the party of the POTUS and our own Cathy McMorris Rodgers (CMR). Baxley put forward the questions in language that suggests they have some basis in the universe of actual fact, evidence and truth. Fortunately, they do not.

Ramp up vaccinations

Suggestion for Spokane Health District: use the million dollars county commissioners just gave you to rent the Arena, set up a hundred stations, hire WSU nursing students and WSU/UW medical students to vaccinate people, and call in each age group (age 85 and older today, age 84 and older tomorrow, etc) to come to the Arena and get their shots.

State-supported Big Oil

So from what I have learned so far, the Washington state Department of Licensing is collecting $75-plus from all hybrid and electric car owners on top of their registration fees and giving the money to power companies such as Avista so they can have charging stations.

Vaccine priorities skewed

The prioritization list for people to get the COVID-19 vaccine makes no sense to me. Perhaps someone out there can clarify to help me understand.

Thank-you, Rich Landers, for your story, “Trails don’t happen by accident.” (Nov. 26)

Those of us who know …

We are rapidly approaching the day for electors to vote for president. Seven states have conflicting votes: seven Democrat governors submitted seven Democrat elector names and seven state houses submitted seven Republican elector names. (The Constitution says state LEGISLATURES are to determine the electors.) If it continues that way through the actual voting, the Constitution says the president of the Senate must send the issue to the House for resolution. When the House votes, each state has one vote. How easy (or hard) do you think it will be for the Constitution to be followed?

We’re all in it

Like it or not, Mr. Dixon, we are all in this pandemic together ("Are they in it with us?," Dec. 25). Wearing masks and maintaining distance saves lives. As public policy, it’s simple, and it’s really not too much to ask. But, after these simple measures, pandemic hardship sets in and forces a difficult public health choice between some businesses’ financial vitality and increased suffering and death. It’s a lousy dilemma with no perfect answers — but our governor and local elected officials have gotten it mostly right.
