Three incumbents’ positions were being vacated in Spokane County before the September primary election, including the state representative position in District 5B. Declarations for 29 county offices and state legislative positions were open to voting. Four incumbent judges were filing for their positions again.

The first three men to land on the moon returned to Earth with former President Richard Nixon praising them. Neil A. Armstrong, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. and Michael Collins landed in the ocean only 9 miles from the USS Hornet. The astronauts were immediately quarantined behind a biological barrier for the remote chance of bringing different lunar germs.

The Washington State Patrol reported three separate Inland Empire traffic accidents that left five people dead. A triple-fatality accident occurred just north of Clayton on U.S. Highway 395, both vehicles heading in opposite directions had swerved left in a head-on collision. The cause of the accident was unknown and remained under investigation.

James G. Cross, the president of a bakers union, declined to take a polygraph test during an investigation in which he was accused of breaking into a hotel room and assaulting a “white-haired” woman identified as Lillian Ehrlich, of the Bronx, New York. A further investigation came to the union when Cross testified under oath that he had taken money from the union and put it into a special account with his personal money.

Numerous earthquakes were detected beneath the peak of Mount Hood, causing a volcano hazard watch to be issued. Scientists installed three seismometers and a telemeter station on the peak, with more than 50 earthquakes found in four days. The main concern of the scientists was where the earthquakes were happening 4 miles underneath the center of the mountain, possibly indicating magma shifting.

William Marshall, 24, was a radio operator for the British foreign office when convicted of spying for Russia. Marshall called himself a “misfit” in the British embassy office in Moscow but still declared his innocence. Judge Sir Patrick Barry presided over the trial in Old Bailey, the same courthouse that convicted and sentenced German-born Klaus Fuchs two years prior.

Superior Court Judge Ralph E. Foley sentenced Corrine Ford to a negligent homicide charge. Ford was sentenced to not more than 20 years. The court suspended an additional 60-day term in the county jail on a charge of driving while under the influence of liquor.

Luis Robinson, 26, was on leave while his ship, the USS Detroit, was docked in Bath, Maine. Robinson was on holiday near John F. Kennedy Airport where he decided to hijack a bus, shoot two people and hold the vehicle and the remaining passengers hostage for more than nine hours.
